Want a proven morale booster at your company? Have your supervisors learn to thank their workers for a job well done in the workers' native language. Not just a simple "thank you," but a few phrases addressing the specific task and how it was done. How about giving your managers the communication tools to explain procedures and safety rules and to know they are being understood? What better way to improve safety and to retain happy, productive workers? Everyone benefits. But, who has time to implement these changes? Let's face it, most employers are burdened with a time crunch, to say the least. Too busy to send their supervisors or employees out to lengthy and expensive language courses[..]
Classroom Bingo Cards
I think it's probably true that most people know to play the game of bingo - we've all played it at one time or another. Many people tend however to think of the game as one mostly played by seniors, or in perhaps in community or church halls as part of money raising efforts - but in turns out that bingo, or rather variants of the standard game, are also becoming increasing in schools and educational environments as a teaching tool. More and more educators are adopting bingo for use in their classes. This is because they can see that the game is very simple for students to learn how to play, but can be easily adapted to different lessons, subjects and age ranges of students.[..]
Printable Bingo Cards
Most people know how to play the game of bingo, after all it's a game that many of us either played as kids or learned to enjoy in later life. The idea of the game is quite simple: every player is given a bingo card (sometimes known as a "bingo board" or "bingo sheet"), each of the squares contains an item (traditionally a number), and players tick off squares when the corresponding items are called out by the bingo caller. The objective of the game is to be the first player to get a continuous line of items diagonally, vertically or horizontally across the card, and then claim the win by calling out "Bingo!". As already mentioned, in traditional versions of bingo, the items in the[..]
Valentine's Bingo Card Maker
February 14th is the day that we celebrate St. Valentine's Day. This is a day traditionally associated with lovers and romantic love, marriage proposals, giving gifts to loved ones, and of course sending cards. A game of bingo is also an enjoyable idea to mark St. Valentine's Day. The game is conducted exactly like a standard game of bingo, but with one key rule change: instead of playing with the normal bingo cards printed with numbers, the game is played with special cards printed with words that are related to the holiday. If you would like to play this version of bingo, the principal requirement is some bingo cards printed with the words and phrases related to the holiday theme. It[..]

Create Your Own Bingo Cards
If you want to play bingo, of course you need bingo cards - one for each player. However, as far as traditional bingo (the game played using bingo cards printed with numbers) is concerned, there is probably no desperate need to create the cards yourself. However these days, the traditional game is not the be all and end all of bingo. More and more people are taking to playing themed versions of the game, and these versions of bingo require custom cards printed with words or phrases relating to the particular theme, rather than the traditional numbered cards. Perhaps the most popular themed versions of bingo are those based around holidays and seasonal events. For example, you could play[..]
How to Write Grammar Check English
Back in high school or college, your teachers in your writing classes would always remind you to dot your i's and cross your t's. The importance of grammar in conveying a clear, meaningful message can't be stressed enough. After all, English grammar consists of rules that govern the language. Students and professionals alike must keep a sharp eye for details when writing to avoid embarrassing grammatical lapses. Writing with atrocious grammar has its painful consequences-like loss of credibility for a company, less job opportunities for job applicants, or decreased sales for businesses. Aside from that, writing is more formal than speaking in the English language. So you can't afford to[..]

The Crime of Double Negatives - Revealed!
Among the many challenges learning English as second language poses, an all time classic is a double negative. Since double negatives do exist and in fact are quite correct in other languages, for instance Spanish, many ESL students have to face the fact that in English they are not correct and therefore should not be used. What is a double negative, you might ask. It is is the nonstandard usage of two negatives used in the same construction. In a double negative sentence, they cancel each other and create a positive. Today, they are considered grammar mistakes. The standard use of negatives in English can be understood from a mathematical concept. If you have two positives, for example[..]
Custom Essays: 3 Qualities ESL Learners Should Look For
English as Second Language (ESL) learners can rely on custom essays to ease the pressure of academic life. For these students, the various academic requirements that await them are very intimidating. The difficulty in meeting these requirements is rooted on the language barrier that separates ESL learners from native English speakers. Much as they want to meet professorsâ requisites, ESL learners find themselves at a very disadvantaged position. Staying competitive even becomes more complicated since these students do not have a firm grasp of the English language. A simple essay writing assignment or a class recitation turns out to be a burden since there are various language[..]

The Economist says, "[English] is the language of globalization-of international business, politics... It is the language of computers and the Internet... it is the dominant international language in communications, science, aviation, entertainment, radio and diplomacy...." Dolch Sight Words Bingo
In 1948, Edward William Dolch, phD, prepared a list of 220 common English "service" words, and a further 95 common English nouns, for his book "Problems in Reading". Edward Dolch's list was based upon the frequency with which these words appeared in children's reading material of the time, and the fact that very few of these particular words could be sounded out phonetically. Dolch's conclusion was that for a person (whether that be a child or an adult learning English as a foreign or second language) to achieve reading fluency in English, they would need to be able to recognize all of these words. Nearly 60 years of educational experience has borne out this finding. Today's educators[..]
Learning English - What Are the Benefits?
Learning English can be one of the most beneficial decisions an individual can make to further a business career. Each year, innumerable negotiations and business proposals were conveyed in English resulting in billions of dollars of business. Learning English immediately raises your earning potential, and puts you on the "fast track" toward a higher income. Unfortunately, learning English is not a simple task. In fact, many language experts consider English one of the hardest languages to learn, especially once the individual fluently speaks another language. This is because the sentence structure is often much different from other languages, and those people who seek to learn English[..]

Mistakes are the Mother of Success: But what does this really mean? Developing confidence is an important part of learning a language. I am a firm believer that mistakes are an important part of any learning cycle. As Henry Ford famously said: “I don’t make mistakes, I learn too much from them”. In the case of English as second language these wise words have so much truth attached to them. In many instances, I have seen capable non-native English speakers become withdrawn and shy when it comes to speaking with native English speakers. With regards to increasing confidence, a major obstacle for many Asian speakers to overcome is the “loss of face” feeling when speaking to[..]
The (de)Evolution of the English Language
Never before in history has a single language been as widely used as English. The number of English users in Asia alone is more or less equal to the number of Native English speakers worldwide: 350 million, more or less the combined populations of the United States, Britain and Canada. The advent of the Internet has boosted English even further, about eighty percent of the world's electronically stored information is in English, and this widespread use of the language has caused an increase in the demand for English courses. An estimate by the British Council reports that today more than 1 billion people are learning English for work, study or leisure. China is strongly pushing English[..]

INTRODUCTION Teaching is always a dynamic activity. It unfolds a world of knowledge and information, experience and erudition (Chakrabarti, 1998). Effective teaching requires more than straightforward teaching methods. Teachers need to know their students well and be able to adapt their teaching styles to a particular classroom and to individual students. (Elliott et al, 2000). Effective teachers are those who achieve the goals they set for themselves or have set for them by others. An effective teacher must possess the knowledge and skills needed to attain the goals and must be able to use that knowledge and those skills appropriately if the goals are to be achieved. Older Teachers
a retired engineer the other day and she told me she was half way through a TEFL training course. She wanted to know what I thought her chances were of finding a teaching job when she has completed the course. Well, I can't disguise the fact that there is a lot of age prejudice in the world of ELT. I think all sorts of reasons combine to make this a profession dominated by young teachers. First, it appeals to those who want to be able to see the world and gain experience: inevitably it's the young who fit this profile. Second, if we're honest, pay is often unattractive in comparison to other professions and young people will tolerate that in a trade-off with their travel ambitions. Then[..]

Having Trouble Finding One Job? Get Five Instead Which Is Much Easier And Here's How!
ultiple streams of income In this economy the idea of having just one job doesn't make sense. First there is much competition for a single job. Second, once committed to just one job, independence and flexibility is taken away. The best strategy in this economy especially for those over 40 is to have multiple streams of income. This gives one the best sense of security. If one stream of income doesn't work out, there are many others to turn to. I suggest the number five as a target to aim for. Why? No scientific reason other than you can keep track of them on one hand. This approach, of course, takes a whole different thought process. One of the best ways to start is to search on the[..]

7 Reasons Why People Hate Learning a Foreign Language
Which Foreign Language? It's been said on other occasions that a key question people ask when thinking of learning a foreign language is "which foreign language should I try to learn?" Reasons for wanting or needing to learn a foreign language can be almost as many and as varied as the number of people themselves. Family, ancestry, employment, business, education, travel, adventure, romance and other personal concerns all may have their respective roles in the decision to learn and continue learning a foreign language. With literally thousands of spoken languages in the world besides some of the major ones like English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Arabic, Italian, Japanese and German,[..]
Most people believe that to learn to speak a foreign language like English well, they need to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars and pass through years learning grammar, vocabulary and practicing before they can develop any fluency. People think they need to struggle with long vocabulary lists, grammar rules and irregularities and memorization of irregular verb lists and language forms that only tend to distort, twist and confuse you. You are sheepishly led to believe that only after all this can you hope to "speak" any English, French, Spanish or whatever other foreign language you may wish to learn. THIS IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE. Unfortunately, in many societies, many "institutions" use[..]

He indicated his personal preference for the Redhouse Dictionaries -- the Büyük El Sözlüğü in particular. But then, to our surprise, he told us that his foreign-language examiner thought the Redhouse Dictionaries too Americanized. That rang my bell, and I replied... Quote> I'm sorry, but your foreign-language examiner is mistaken. The Redhouse Dictionaries go out of there way to include current British language usage. I quote, "The[..]
How to Improve English Pronunciation of Silent Letters
With English as second language, proper pronunciation in the vernacular can be more difficult than usual. These few tips should help you get a good grasp on it. 1. Speak Slowly. The faster you speak, the more mistakes you're going to make. Unless you've already mastered a language, a slower pace will be of tremendous benefit. The faster you speak, the more pronounced your accent is going to be. In the English language, taking 2.5 seconds to utter a word is perfectly normal for non-native speakers. 2. Pronounce All The Sounds. As someone who's more familiar with the nuances of a language other than English, it's tempting to ignore certain sounds if you're unused to doing them in your[..]
International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
The International English Language Testing System or more commonly known as IELTS is the brainchild of the British and Australian. It is an international standardised test of English language proficiency. IELTS has effectively been granted the monopoly power when both the British and Australian home office made it compulsory for student visa applicants to take the test. IELTS is also used as a benchmark for skilled migration applicants. Students sometime even complain that waiting time is too long because too many people are in the queue to take IELTS. The test fee is not cheap either. It is not an amount that any student can easily afford. The test fee in the UK is priced at 110[..]
